Race
Players are discouraged from creating characters that are not in the PHB:
- Most NPCs would have seen at least one person of each PHB race, and perhaps only really know 3 or 4. This would of course change depending on whether they live in a large metropolitan city or a small village.
- Life is hard and dangerous. A commoner encountering a monster race typically results in being maimed at best or killed at almost worst (there are surely worse fates than death). This fear is not racism but pragmatic survival.
- A person of a wild and unknown race would be interpreted similarly to a modern person encountering an extra terrestrial today.
Custom races can still be considered, with the understanding that the player character might find some encounters difficult. Formulas for calculating height, weight, and natural lifespan are required.
All bonuses and abilities granted will require DM approval; as a general guideline, bonuses from using custom races may not:
- adjust experience gain
- be larger than Medium
- exceed +2 in any one attribute's adjustment
- exceed +4 total points for all attribute adjustments
- provide a feat or clone an existing feat's abilities
- provide unusual or exceptional immunities, resistances, or abilities beyond "normal". See the PHB races for what is typical for non-humans.
- add extra movement options (fly/hover/swim) without significant downsides. (For example see Locathah Rising p.24)
Deity-based Casters
All characters who serve a deity are encouraged to use a pre-existing one from any sourcebook. Using a custom god is allowed provided:
- "in real life" references are avoided (religions, organizations, people)
- the god is not evil aligned
- must have an opposing god or significant non-deistic opposing force
- must be possible to leave the god's favor (less formally: a god cannot be wabi-sabi and roll with whatever, there must be actions that would anger them and cause the deity to forsake a follower)
